OpenAI Faces Fierce Competition from Google’s Gemini 3

1 December 2025 08:22

OpenAI, a company valued at around $500 billion, is facing increasingly fierce technical competition . Google’s latest version of Gemini 3 , in particular, outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-5 in several areas.

“The world today is profoundly different from the situation two years ago, when OpenAI was ahead of everyone else,” Thomas Wolf, co-founder and chief scientific officer of the artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face, told the Financial Times .

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman himself recently admitted in a leaked memo to staff that the company must prepare for a period of intense competition.

Just a year ago, Google’s position seemed less favorable, but after its May developer conference and the launch of the Nano Banana photography tool, the number of monthly users of the Gemini app jumped from 400 million to 650 million . However, this growth doesn’t appear to be proceeding gradually. Meanwhile, Alphabet’s market capitalization is approaching $4 trillion .

While OpenAI boasts around 800 million weekly users, data from analytics tool Similarweb , according to the Financial Times, shows that people now spend more time on Gemini than ChatGPT . OpenAI’s main challenge is generating sufficient revenue, potentially through advertising integration and expanding its subscriber base.

A key advantage for Google: the company trained Gemini 3 using its own Tensor Processing Unit chips instead of relying on Nvidia hardware. ” This fully integrated approach between hardware and software allows us to reach consumers, customers, and businesses at this scale ,” Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google’s AI architect and CTO of DeepMind, told the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, is building a strong business.

The company is raising capital at an expected valuation of around $300 billion . According to the Financial Times, the Claude chatbot is particularly popular with enterprise clients in the programming sector.
