Windows 11 now forces you to connect: is offline freedom over?

Microsoft has fixed several bugs that prevented Windows 11 from being installed without internet access or creating a profile on the company’s website. While the company explains that this poses a security concern for users, the rest of the world agrees that no security issues were found in previous versions of Windows.

Microsoft has significantly complicated the Windows 11 installation process for users who want to install the operating system without a Microsoft account or an internet connection. According to industry portal Windows Central, Microsoft has fixed several common flaws in the installer that allowed users to install the operating system the old way, as was the case until Windows 11 was released in October 2021.

Microsoft has published the results of its efforts on its official website. The company has been addressing these vulnerabilities for four years and, over the years, has consistently maintained that it is doing so solely for user security. The current situation is no exception: by requiring users to be constantly connected to the internet to activate or create an account on its portal, Microsoft justifies this decision by arguing that circumventing this requirement could result in installing Windows 11 with incorrect settings.

It’s important to note that Windows 11 can run with a local account linked to a specific computer, completely independent of Microsoft servers. This has been verified by millions of users worldwide. To open the local profile creation window during system installation, you could type the command start ms-cxh:localonly. However , this option no longer works: Microsoft has disabled it.

It’s important to note that all of these changes apply only to new Windows 11 installation images. Previously released builds still contain all of these workarounds. Furthermore, these changes have so far only affected test installation images; they have not yet been implemented in stable builds.

Users regularly and clearly explain to Microsoft that they absolutely do not want to tie their computer’s operating system to servers located in remote locations. This is manifested in the constant search for new ways to circumvent the requirement to create an online account instead of a local profile in Windows 11.

For example, for a long time, deliberately entering an incorrect email address when creating an online profile was widely used. This caused a crash and the offline account activation window to appear. Microsoft only recently fixed this flaw.

As reported by Windows Central, users will continue to look for new ways to circumvent Microsoft’s requirements, and it’s possible that these will be simpler than those Microsoft has already blocked. However, for now, the software company appears to have eliminated the simplest and most effective methods.
