Tor Browser Says No to Artificial Intelligence! Security Comes First

Interestingly, while major companies like Microsoft and Google are actively adding AI features to their browsers, the Tor development team has chosen to remove them.

@henry, a Tor project contributor, pointed out that the team failed to fully verify the training process and the “black box” behavior of the AI models, so they decided to eliminate risks first .

While some users may be willing to “accept Mozilla’s risks” for certain features, the Tor project explicitly prioritizes not integrating these features.

Among the removed components are Mozilla’s AI-powered chat sidebar, introduced in March of this year, and the page summary link preview feature, launched in May.

Additionally, Tor Browser 15.0a4 has also removed some Mozilla/Firefox branding , such as the fox icon, the Firefox homepage, and the new history sidebar. The history sidebar has been reverted to the old Tor Browser 14.5 interface and is accessible via the Ctrl+H shortcut.

Regarding the display of the address bar, Tor Browser will no longer hide the protocol part of the URL (such as http or https) on the desktop version, but this part will still be hidden on the Android mobile platform.

Other minor updates include: improved emoji rendering on the Linux platform (now integrated with the Noto Color Emoji font), the addition of the Jigmo font to optimize the display of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters, and improved dark theme support for the Tor browser-only interface.
