South Korean intelligence agencies , including the National Intelligence Service, reportedly believe there is a high probability that US President Donald Trump will hold a summit with North Korean Workers’ Party General Secretary Kim Jong Un.
On November 4, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service briefed members of the National Assembly on the situation in North Korea and other matters.
According to members of Congress, the National Intelligence Service said there was a “high probability” of a summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un , explaining that “Kim Jong Un is willing to engage with the United States. If conditions are favorable, he will seek contact with his US counterpart.”
The National Intelligence Service also reportedly believes that “the United States and South Korea will hold routine joint military exercises next March. This will represent a turning point in the situation.”
On the cyber front, North Korea has always focused on developing a state-run hacker sector, used both for espionage operations and large-scale cybercrime campaigns. In recent years, these groups have been linked to sophisticated attacks against cryptocurrency exchanges and financial institutions , aiming to circumvent international sanctions and finance the regime’s military programs. According to estimates, North Korean hackers will have stolen over $1.3 billion in cryptocurrencies in 2024 , a figure that is expected to exceed $2 billion by 2025.
We have also spoken several times about the so-called North Korean ghost workers , IT professionals who pose as remote workers from other countries to infiltrate international companies and generate cash flows for Pyongyang.
In this context, a possible meeting between the United States and North Korea could represent not only an attempt at diplomatic détente but also an opportunity to ease sanctions and reduce the intensity of North Korea’s cyber operations in the global digital ecosystem.
Trump had already expressed his willingness to meet with Kim Jong-un during his visit to South Korea. In this regard, the National Intelligence Service explained: “Although a summit between the United States and North Korea has not taken place, it has been confirmed through various channels that North Korea is secretly conducting activities in preparation for dialogue with the United States.”
