October 15, 2025 marks an anniversary of exceptional importance in the history of Italian national security: one hundred years since the birth of the Military Information Service (SIM) , the country’s first intelligence service, established in 1925 by royal decree.
The SIM was created with the aim of unifying the intelligence structures of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, laying the foundations for a coordinated system for safeguarding state security.
Since then, Italian intelligence has undergone a century of profound transformations, moving from its military origins in the post-war period to the current Information System for the Security of the Republic , defined by Law No. 124 of 2007 .
This evolution has accompanied the most significant moments in national history, from the birth of the Republic to the great international challenges of today.
Over time, intelligence has consolidated a central role in ensuring the security of democratic institutions , the protection of citizens , and international cooperation against global threats and emerging conflicts. Its activities, increasingly integrated with those of foreign partners, are now based on the principles of legality, transparency, and the defense of constitutional values.
To celebrate the centenary milestone, a program of institutional initiatives has been prepared aimed at enhancing the contribution of Intelligence to the country and strengthening public awareness of its strategic role.
Among the initiatives, the issuance of a commemorative stamp within the “Excellence of the Production System and Made in Italy” series and the minting of a limited-edition commemorative coin stand out.
On the occasion of this important anniversary, the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella received a delegation of the Italian intelligence services at the Quirinale .
The meeting was attended by Alfredo Mantovano, Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Delegated Authority for the Security of the Republic; Vittorio Rizzi, Director General of the Department of Security Information (DIS); Giovanni Caravelli, Director of the Agency for External Security and Information (AISE); and Bruno Valensise, Director of the Agency for Internal Security and Information (AISI).
The meeting represented a moment of recognition for a century of constant commitment to protecting the Republic , in the name of an increasingly modern, civilized intelligence service oriented towards the service of citizens.
