Artificial intelligence surpasses humans, but not in every field. Is AGI near or far away?

Artificial intelligence surpasses humans, but not in every field. Is AGI near or far away?

According to experts, humanity has entered a new stage in the development of artificial intelligence: an era in which systems no longer simply assist humans , but are able to autonomously perform complex tasks that previously required human intervention.

Speakers at a recent meeting on the topic included some of the industry’s most respected names: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang , Meta AI chief Yann LeCun , and Turing and Nobel laureates Yoshua Bengio , Geoffrey Hinton , Fei-Fei Li , and Bill Dalley .

The 2025 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering is awarded to seven engineers who have made fundamental contributions to the development of modern machine learning, a key component of advances in artificial intelligence (AI).

Yoshua Bengio , Geoffrey Hinton , John Hopfield , and Yann LeCun have long advocated artificial neural networks as an effective model for machine learning, which now represents the dominant paradigm. Together, they are responsible for the conceptual foundations of this approach.

Jensen Huang and Bill Dally led the development of the hardware platforms that support modern machine learning algorithms. Their vision of leveraging graphics processing units (GPUs) and their subsequent architectural advancements enabled the scalability that has been crucial to the success of their application.

Fei-Fei Li recognized the importance of providing high-quality datasets, both to evaluate progress and to support the training of machine learning algorithms. By creating ImageNet, a large-scale image database used for object recognition software research, she provided access to millions of labeled images, crucial for training and evaluating computer vision algorithms.

In the meeting, Huang emphasized that “for the first time, artificial intelligence is truly augmenting human capabilities and enabling the realization of concrete projects.” According to the Nvidia CEO, AI systems have already reached a level of “general intelligence” sufficient to provide practical solutions on a large scale.

LeCun, however, specified that the achievement of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) will not be a sudden event, but a gradual process : “The capabilities of the systems will increase progressively, in different fields and at different times,” he explained.

Not all experts, however, agree that machines will surpass humans in every field. Fei-Fei Li noted that artificial intelligence is already capable of recognizing tens of thousands of objects and translating hundreds of languages, capabilities impossible for any individual. However, she added, “Human intelligence will remain a pillar of society: machines may be more powerful, but only humans truly understand meaning and context.”

Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton , on the other hand, predicted that within twenty years, artificial intelligence will be able to defeat humans in any debate. Yoshua Bengio confirmed this vision, arguing that “there is no conceptual obstacle to machines one day learning to do everything we can do.”

The debate comes amid growing competition between the United States and China for so-called ” superintelligence .” Giants like OpenAI , Anthropic , and other industry players have already attracted tens of billions of dollars in investment, while AI company valuations continue to skyrocket.

On one point, however, experts remain divided: for some, the advent of AGI is imminent , and could arrive within two years ; for others, it is a goal that will take decades to achieve.
