China under surveillance: Users sanctioned for spreading fake news online

3 October 2025 18:26

In recent months, Hainan public security authorities have launched investigations and imposed administrative sanctions against several internet users responsible for spreading false information that has disrupted public order.

Talk about new energy vehicles and tourism in Hainan

A user identified as Su Moumou posted online claims that electric vehicles would be unable to cross the sea to Hainan without a ticket, adding that “no one will come to Hainan this winter.” The authorities’ investigation found that the information was distorted and spread with the intent of attracting attention, creating alarm among residents and tourists.

Fake ads about Sanya casino

User Song took photographs of the new Sanya International Duty Free City building and spread the false news online that the building would become a legal casino hotel by 2028. Authorities also determined that the dissemination of the information had caused public concern and disrupted social order.

Misinformation about accidents involving animals

Shi Moumou spread a baseless story about a car-trailer accident in Haikou, describing it as “cat abuse.” The publication, accompanied by the personal information of the person involved, upset the local community and led to the authorities issuing administrative fines.

Rumors about electric vehicle regulations

User Liang Moumou posted a fabricated article online about new regulations on electric vehicles in Hainan. The spread of the content caused confusion among residents and sparked online discussions, prompting authorities to take legal action.

False alarms about local events

Several users have spread inaccurate information regarding local events and situations:

  • Pan Moumou uploaded a video from the Yongming Bridge over the Changhua River, falsely claiming that half of Ledong County was mobilized to recover a body, causing panic among the population.
  • Xiao posted that “Sanya was emptying, becoming a ghost town due to the impending war,” sparking alarm and discussion online.
  • Li Moumou spread unfounded reports that all flights to Sanya had been canceled, sparking panic among tourists and residents.

In all cases, public security authorities applied the administrative sanctions provided by law for spreading false information and disturbing public order.

Chinese Internet Police Memo

Police urge users to respect laws and regulations when browsing online and refrain from spreading, believing, or reviving unfounded rumors. Authorities emphasized that those who create and spread misinformation will be prosecuted vigorously, to protect a safe and transparent online environment.
