Google has added a new AI-powered feature to Chrome for Android for reading web pages.
Instead of reading the entire text aloud, the browser can summarize the material in a “podcast” format : two synthesized speakers discuss key points, turning a long article into a short, lively audio.
Early users noticed the new feature in the stable build of Chrome 140.0.7339.124, so it looks like the feature is gradually rolling out to a wider audience.
You can enable voiceover the same way: open a page, click the three dots in the upper right corner, and select “Listen to this page.” A new AI voiceover toggle has appeared in the playback panel next to the speed control, allowing you to instantly switch between standard reading and the “podcast version” of the material.
This feature grew out of the NotebookLM project, which pioneered Google’s “Audio Overviews” —interactive audio summaries of content . This spring, the company added the same feature to the Gemini app, and is now rolling out the idea to Chrome’s 1 billion mobile users.
Podcast Voiceover was previously available in the experimental build of Chrome Canary and in beta, but is now being implemented in the stable build. As usual, the rollout is gradual, so the feature may not be available to all users at the same time.
In short, Chrome turns any “wall of text” into a compact, easy-to-read format— useful when you have tired eyes, are driving, or simply want to get a message across in a few minutes without losing sight of it.
