Google pushes AI as the default search, risking blackouts for independent publishers and blogs.

9 September 2025 11:03

Google wants to make it easier for users to access AI Mode by allowing them to set it as their default search (instead of traditional links). AI Mode is a version of Google Search that uses large language models to summarize information from the web, so users spend more time on Google instead of clicking on website links.

The new AI Mode in Google Search

AI Mode can answer complex questions, process images, summarize information, create tables and graphs, and even provide coding support. As Bleeping Computer points out, AI mode is currently optional and can be found to the left of the “All” tab. It is available in English in 180 countries and territories worldwide.

However, late last week, Logan Kilpatrick, Google AI product manager Studio, announced on social media X that AI mode would soon become the default mode in Google. Later, Robby Stein, vice president of product for Google Search, clarified that the company only intends to make AI mode more easily accessible for people who want to use it.

The company says there are currently no plans to make AI mode the default for everyone, but if a user prefers to use it all the time, a toggle or button for that will be available soon.

In this case, traditional links will not be displayed by default, but you can switch to the old search results view by finding the “Web” tab, which is located at the very bottom of the panel. The publication points out that in the near future, AI mode could become the default search page for everyone. However, Google engineers are currently trying to determine how this shift will affect the advertising industry.

If AI does the summarizing, what happens to publishers?

Google is already testing AI-powered ads and reviews and offering these ads to partners. However, the digital marketing industry hasn’t yet figured out how everything will work if classic links are completely replaced by AI.

Google’s Plans to Monetize AI-Powered Search

Google still holds about 90% of the search market and continues to generate billions of clicks for publishers around the world. However, Google does not pay independent publishers and blogs to use AI to summarize content. In contrast, the company claims that AI-powered summaries send more “quality” clicks to publishers, although there is no official data to support this claim.

An alliance against Google

At the same time, independent research demonstrates that people are less likely to click on search results if The search engine provides them with an AI-based summary.

According to media reports, some independent publishers are already discussing the creation of a media and news alliance to combat the existential crisis posed by the introduction of AI in search engines.
