Microsoft’s new goal for artificial intelligence? Medicine!

The tech giant has announced the creation of a new development team for a “superhuman” artificial intelligence that will outperform human experts in medical diagnoses. The team will be led by Mustafa Suleiman , the company’s head of artificial intelligence.

Microsoft has announced the creation of a new team called the MAI Superintelligence Team , which aims to develop “superhuman” artificial intelligence specialized in medical diagnostics, Reuters reports. The project is led by Mustafa Suleiman, former co-founder of DeepMind and Inflection AI.

According to Suleiman, the new team doesn’t aim to develop general intelligence (AGI) capable of performing any human task, but rather to focus on “expert models” that will achieve superhuman levels of accuracy in specific areas, primarily medical diagnosis . This, he says, is a first step toward developing AI capabilities that will detect diseases before humans and could extend patients’ lives and quality of life.

He said Microsoft has a clear and concrete plan to develop an AI system within two to three years that will outperform human experts in medical diagnoses . Suleiman noted that the company intends to invest significant resources in the process, adding that success would mark a historic breakthrough in global health.

According to market estimates, Microsoft will integrate the results of the new initiative into its Azure Health Data Services cloud services and existing collaborations with medical institutions in the United States and Europe. The immediate goal is to improve the accuracy of image-based diagnoses, genetic analyses, and medical exam summaries, while reducing human error and accelerating clinical decisions.

Beyond the excitement, the move raises regulatory and ethical questions about the degree of trust in systems that achieve “superhuman” accuracy and safety in the event of medical error .

Suleiman stressed that Microsoft will avoid developments that pose an existential risk and will focus on safe solutions for medical use.
