Yes, once again a Windows update has unleashed hell. The harmless “Microsoft Print to PDF” function, a silent ally of users and IT administrators for years, has ended up KO after the April 2025 preview update on Windows 11 24H2 systems.
A feature taken for granted, that of PDF printing, which suddenly… disappears into thin air. No more PDF printer under Settings > Bluetooth devices and printers. And for those who try to reactivate it via optional features or PowerShell? A nice screen with the error 0x800f0922. Printer does not reinstall and driver is not found.
Microsoft has finally patched up the mess with the cumulative update KB5060829, released in preview last Friday.
But beware: the fix is only for the brave ones who install the optional updates of June.
For everyone else, the wait will last until Patch Tuesday of July.
In the meantime, those who don’t want to wait will have to try manual reinstatement:
Win + R
, type optionalfeatures
and search for Microsoft Print to PDF.Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features
Enable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName Printing-PrintToPDFServices-Features
Even in this case, the error 0x800f0922 could recur.
This is just the latest in a long series.
In March, other updates were causing USB printers to crash, making them spit out random characters as if they were going crazy.
In June, Microsoft even warned of possible delays in security patches due to incorrect metadata and critical issues with Windows Update.
In a context where even a simple update can hide some unexpected events, IT teams often find themselves having to carefully plan each installation, testing patches before the final release and monitoring for any anomalies.
This time it was PDF printing. Next time? Maybe a Bluetooth driver, maybe nothing.
What is certain is that every Patch Tuesday brings with it some surprises… and a pinch of healthy caution never hurts.
