Ready for AI-powered Notepad? Coming soon to Windows 11 with PC Copilot+!

Redazione RHC : 19 September 2025 08:04

Windows 11 users with PC Copilot+ will be able to take advantage of advanced artificial intelligence features, now an integral part of the Notepad application, thanks to an update that includes powerful tools for creating and editing text. New features include “Summarize,” “Write,” and “Rewrite,” which can be used directly on the device without a subscription.

Innovative AI-powered tools built into Notepad enable users to efficiently create, optimize, and summarize text. Running directly on the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) of Copilot+ PCs, these tools run locally, allowing offline use without a Microsoft 365 subscription or Microsoft account access.

A key element of this update is a shift in strategy toward an AI model embedded directly on the device. This allows for greater accessibility to advanced writing support features. Previously, the AI capabilities built into Notepad depended on cloud computing and required Microsoft 365 subscriptions, which provided a fixed amount of AI credits. Now, thanks to PC Copilot+, users can enjoy these features for free and without restrictions.

Users with a Microsoft 365 subscription can benefit from a more versatile system. Depending on their needs, they can easily switch between the free, built-in version and the advanced cloud-based version. This hybrid model makes high-quality AI tools accessible to a wider audience, while still offering advanced features to subscribers. Initially, these features will be limited to English-language content.

A significant innovation characterizes the classic text editor with the introduction of artificial intelligence. The “Rewrite” function allows users to adjust the tone, format, and length of existing content, while the “Write” function allows users to produce new text based on a simple suggestion. Additionally, with “Summarize,” users can quickly summarize long documents into compact reports.

This update follows a series of recent improvements to Notepad, including the addition of tab stops, a character counter, spell checking, and autocorrect, making it a more comprehensive editor. Users who prefer the classic, no-frills experience will have the option to disable the new AI features in the app settings.

The new version of Notepad (11.2508.28.0) is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels and is expected to be available to all Windows 11 users with compatible hardware in the coming weeks.
