VPNs are booming in France! Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube blocked? But only by a click!

Starting June 4th, if you try to access Pornhub, YouPorn, or RedTube, you will only be able to see “Liberty Leading the People,” accompanied by a text from the Aylo group. In its press release, the Canadian adult industry giant explains that it has decided to suspend access to its sites from France in response to the entry into force on June 9th of the SREN law and double anonymity. This method of checking visitors’ age, according to the company, jeopardizes their privacy.

So, inevitably, this decision has created frustration among the nearly 3.8 million users of porn sites. Enough to push them to look for circumvention methods to access their “intimate” platforms.

Up to 1,000% more French users

If you choose a VPN, you won’t be alone. Since the afternoon of June 4th, most of these services have seen their number of French customers explode. As a logical consequence of the disappearance of a service widely used in France, this increase has reached impressive levels also for ProtonVPN.

The company shared a screenshot of its statistics, showing an increase of over 1,000% in new account creations.

For the record, ProtonVPN even claims that this growth exceeds that recorded during the TikTok ban in the United States. This highlights the true impact of adult sites on the daily lives of many French people. NordVPN reports a 170% increase in registrations in France.

This appears to be a global phenomenon.

Is it legal to use a VPN to access Pornhub or YouPorn?

However, a question remains: is it legal to use a VPN to access these sites, which are now generally inaccessible in the country?

The answer is simple: yes. The use of virtual private networks is legal in France, and these sites are not inaccessible due to a legal or administrative decision, but rather a specific internal decision by Aylo.

Finally, VPN operators expect criticism, pointing out that the increase in registrations affects French adults, as the procedure requires access to a credit card.

NordVPN also takes this opportunity to express its clear support for the Aylo group, emphasizing that this type of phenomenon is particularly visible in countries“where digital freedoms are threatened.”
