13,000 times faster than a supercomputer. Google presents Willow, the fastest quantum chip on specific algorithms

Google’s quantum AI team announced a major breakthrough in quantum computing with the unveiling of its new Willow processor, a superconducting chip with 105 qubits that it says can perform some calculations 13,000 times faster than today’s most powerful supercomputers.

Willow has successfully completed the Quantum Echoes algorithm , a test designed to measure quantum chaos.

Unlike the 2019 Sycamore experiment, which demonstrated quantum “supremacy” only in a highly specific, randomized test, Willow ’s results have broader scientific value, enabling the modeling of molecular structures and electronic behavior with much greater precision.

Michel Devore, one of the physicists leading the project, described Willow as proof that electrical circuits can behave like “artificial atoms,” allowing researchers to study atomic interactions without relying on traditional approximations.

Each qubit on the chip can simultaneously exist in multiple states and be entangled with others, enabling simultaneous computations across a wide range of possibilities. The accuracy of single-qubit gates reaches 99.97%, and the accuracy of entanglement operations reaches 99.88%.

Researchers caution that this field is far from fully developed. Transitioning to stable, error-correcting logic qubits remains the greatest challenge.

But Willow represents a significant step forward: not just a spectacular demonstration, but a testbed that shows that quantum hardware can now produce results worthy of verification and further development.
