A major outage in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services has caused widespread connection issues around the world, affecting major platforms such as Snapchat, Facebook, and Fortnite , along with numerous other websites and applications.
According to data provided by Downdetector , a portal that monitors Internet outages in real time, an increasing number of online services reported malfunctions throughout the day.
Those affected include cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and artificial intelligence company Perplexity .
In an official statement, AWS reported that it has identified the root cause of the failure and initiated recovery procedures, confirming significant progress towards a complete resolution.
“We have implemented the first mitigation measures and are observing the first signs of recovery for some affected services,” the company said.
The outage, which originated in the US-EAST-1 region, one of AWS’s most important infrastructure locations, had a domino effect on numerous global services that rely on that same region.
The company added that while most services are being restored, some users may still experience latency or temporary errors .
AWS recommended that customers retry accessing the interrupted services and noted that while most requests are returning to completion, “delays may persist due to the backlog of queued requests.”
According to DownDetector, which monitors internet outages, outages on dozens of websites appear to be easing. Numerous sites that had reported problems Monday morning have seen a decline, including Slack, Snapchat, Reddit, the UK government website, and others.
