Cyberattacks on European airports: ENISA identifies ransomware

Redazione RHC : 22 September 2025 16:56

The European Union Agency for Information Security (ENISA) has announced that it has identified the type of ransomware responsible for the serious disruptions that paralyzed several European airports, including Berlin, London, Brussels and Dublin , last weekend.

“ENISA,” a statement reads, “is aware of the ongoing disruption to airport operations caused by a third-party ransomware attack. ” Members of the CSIRT network (the network of EU Member States’ national incident response officers) and CyCLONe (the network of Member States’ national authorities responsible for cyber crisis management) are actively exchanging information on the matter, and ENISA is providing support in the form of a secretariat.”

“The type of ransomware has been identified. Law enforcement is involved in the investigation,” ENISA later announced, without divulging further details. Now it’s important to understand whether the IT infrastructure can be reconstructed from backups and how long it will take to reactivate services.

According to ENISA, the attack targeted a third-party IT service provider for check-in and boarding , causing delays and long lines at terminals. Authorities confirmed that law enforcement is already investigating the source and extent of the threat.

The consequences were serious: in Brussels passengers faced hours of waiting , while in Berlin operations remained slow even on the following Monday, creating logistical difficulties even for travellers who had come to the city for the Berlin Marathon .

The episode once again highlights how vulnerable the transport sector is to cyber attacks which, by hitting critical suppliers, can generate large-scale domino effects .

The attack targeted Collins’ Muse software and highlighted the growing risks to critical infrastructure in a tense and war-torn geopolitical climate.

According to Reuters online, disruptions continue today. The marathon saw a higher-than-usual flow of passengers at Berlin airport, but check-in systems remain out of order and departures are experiencing delays of over seventy minutes.
