The first edition of the International Cybersecurity Olympiad ended in Singapore with an excellent result for Italy. Four Italian students reached the podium, winning gold and silver medals in the competition that brought together about 150 talents from 30 countries around the world.

The Italian team, led by Gaspare Ferraro and Matteo Rossi, won a gold medal Leonardo Mattei from the “Antonio Labriola” Scientific High School in Rome and Jacopo Di Pumpo from the “Marie Curie” I.T.S.O.S in Cernusco sul Naviglio. In addition,Alan Davide Bovo from the “Pascal Comandini” High School in Cesena and Stefano Perrucci from the “Enrico Fermi” Technical Institute in Francavilla Fontana (Brescia) won a silver medal.

Italy was the best country in terms of total score and will host the 2027 edition of the International Cybersecurity Olympiad. “We are very proud of the excellent result achieved by our entire team,” said Gaspare Ferraro, team coordinator.

The event, hosted by the National University of Singapore, one of the best universities in the world, saw participants compete in two days of individual CTF (Capture-The-Flag) competition on topics such as web security, reverse engineering, binary exploitation, digital forensics and cryptography.

The four Italian students were selected based on their results at the Italian Cybersecurity Olympics.

Leonardo Mattei had participated in the 2025 edition of the Capture The Flag of Red hot Cyber, finishing in second place with the Winnerz team (2350 points) , behind the Italian-Brazilian team of PizzaFeijoada (4210 points). The team of CarbonHackers (with 2350 points) finished in third place.

Here you can see the video interview at minute 1:53. Congratulations again to the entire Winnerz team and to Leonardo Mattei. Yes, we know… we still owe you for that shirt. We promise to fix this next year — RHC’s word!

All this, to saythat in Italy we are full of skills and very good ethical hackers. The important thing, today more than ever, is to start thinking that these people can really make a difference in technologically advanced contexts, both public and private.

We must never forget that cybersecurity is first and foremost a technical subject, only secondarily a legal one. After all, criminal hackers in jurisprudence don’t care at all. And that’s why we need solid, practical and up-to-date skills: because those who know how a cyber attack really works also know how to prevent it, mitigate its effects or respond effectively.

Supporting these young talents, creating structured training courses and valorising the professionals who already work in the sector is a strategic priority. Because the future of digital security passes through them.
