Microsoft denies that the August update damaged SSDs: Users say otherwise.

Microsoft has denied that the August Windows 11 security update is linked to mass complaints of storage device failures. The investigation was launched following reports from users who, after installing the KB5063878 patch, said that their SSDs and HDDs began to fail or corrupt data.

The company acknowledged that it was aware of these incidents and that it had collected information from affected customers. However, internal tests and telemetry data have not confirmed an increase in file failures or corruption. Joint checks with storage device manufacturers have also not shown a connection between the update and the issues.

Japanese users were the first to report the issues.

The issue occurred during write-intensive operations, such as copying large volumes or multiple files to drives that were more than 60% full. Some devices recovered after rebooting, but others remained completely inaccessible.

Similar complaints have been received from owners of Corsair Force MP600, SanDisk Extreme Pro, Maxio SSD, Kioxia Exceria Plus G4, Kioxia M.2, as well as drives installed on InnoGrit and Phison even stated that it is working with Microsoft and other partners to determine the cause of the incident. The company emphasized that it understands the extent of the disruption and is checking the affected controllers.

Until the details are clarified, Windows 11 users are advised not to perform heavy write operations, meaning not copying tens of gigabytes of data to storage devices that are more than 60% full.

Microsoft, for its part, promises to continue monitoring feedback after each update and investigate all new incidents.
