WhatsApp has announced a new feature that allows for in-app message translation . The company emphasizes that language barriers often limit free communication, considering its service is used daily by more than 3 billion users in approximately 180 countries.
Now, if you receive a message in an unknown language, tap and hold it, then select “Translate.” You can then select the language to translate from or into and download a dictionary to save for later use.
In terms of security, the company emphasizes that the transfer maintains the confidentiality of correspondence: all operations are performed only on the user’s device and WhatsApp does not have access to the texts.
The translation feature is available in private and group chats , as well as channel updates. Android users can also enable automatic translation of all chat conversations, allowing new incoming messages to be instantly displayed in the selected language.
Starting September 23, the feature will gradually be available to Android and iPhone users. Initially, Android users will be able to choose from six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone owners will be able to choose from over 19 default languages, with more on the way.
WhatsApp hopes that the introduction of message translation will help overcome language barriers and make communication between people from different regions more convenient and natural.
