Beyond espionage: “Salt Typhoon” also reportedly targeted Donald Trump

A vast Chinese cyberespionage operation, dubbed “Salt Typhoon,” was recently described as the most ambitious ever attributed to Beijing. According to the report, this campaign resulted in the theft of sensitive data on nearly every American, including high-profile names like President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. The scale of the attack confirms the ability of Chinese groups to penetrate deep into international communications networks.

The targets hit are not limited to the United States: Salt Typhoon has compromised telecommunications networks in over 80 countries, demonstrating the global reach of this operation. The choice to target telecommunications appears strategic, as it allows for the interception, manipulation, and use of information on a large scale, with potential repercussions for governments, businesses, and citizens.

In parallel to Salt Typhoon, another threat vector, identified as “Volt Typhoon,” has been cited, which has shifted attention to American critical infrastructure, including electricity grids. The combination of the two scenarios increases national security concerns, as it demonstrates a dual capability: political espionage and targeted attacks on vital facilities.

The US response is being structured through legal and cybersecurity countermeasures deployed by agencies such as the FBI and the Department of Justice. Authorities have strengthened defense tools and intensified investigations, signaling their willingness to counter the operation not only on technical levels, but also on legal and diplomatic ones.

The report also highlights the serious implications for ordinary citizens, who risk seeing their privacy compromised due to the exfiltration of personal data. Added to these critical issues is the threat to strategic infrastructure, capable of directly impacting people’s daily lives, making the scope of the attack even more alarming.

Guam has emerged as one of the focal points of this affair, as it is considered particularly vulnerable due to its strategic importance in the geopolitical and military landscape. The island’s location makes it a prime target, symbolizing the fragility of the balance of power in this new form of conflict.

Despite the seriousness of the accusations, China has denied any involvement in the operation. However, international condemnation and reactions are growing, contributing to fueling political tensions between Washington and Beijing. Experts estimate economic losses of billions of dollars, an impact that adds to the geopolitical consequences, transforming Salt Typhoon into an event destined to profoundly affect relations between the two powers.
