The French Ministry of the Interior’s email servers were targeted by a cyberattack. The hacker managed to access “several files,” but no “serious compromise” has been detected so far.
The news, revealed by BFMTV , was confirmed by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on RTL radio.
” There was a cyberattack ,” he said. “An attacker managed to access several files .” The nature and number of files involved are not yet known, according to Laurent Nuñez, who specified that he has no ” signs of serious compromise ” at this stage.
Standard security procedures have been implemented and security has been strengthened, particularly regarding access to the information system for all public employees. This includes the introduction of proactive analysis of servers and email accounts and the systematic implementation of two-factor authentication, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
At the same time, a report has been filed with Attorney General Laure Beccuau. A judicial investigation is underway.
At the moment, no hypotheses are being considered. ” There are various motivations for a cyber attack: sometimes it can be foreign interference, people wanting to challenge public authorities to demonstrate their ability to access systems, and cybercrimes. For now, we don’t know what it is ,” the minister explained.
When asked about the possibility of a large-scale data breach, Laurent Nuñez assured that ” everything has been put in place to prevent it ” and to ” immediately strengthen the system .”
