Germany invests in cyborg insects and AI robots for military and civilian use.

The events of recent years are rapidly changing the world, forcing us to rethink many aspects of economics and production, as well as seek new tools to solve current problems. This transformation is allowing young companies and developers whose ideas until recently seemed unthinkable to come forward. Germany, as Europe’s largest economy, is poised to invest huge sums of money in revolutionary and unprecedented projects, including cyborgs and AI-powered robots.

According to Reuters news agency, the largest military budget in Germany’s history will largely be allocated to the development of AI-based technologies, cyborgs, and various robotic platforms. No expense has been spared. Other beneficiaries include the startup Swarm Biotactics, which is developing cyborg insects. Authorities have simplified access to state funding for young companies and are ready to support virtually any risky project.

According to the developers of Swarm Biotactics, cockroaches can be equipped with miniature backpacks equipped with cameras and transmitters, as well as nerve stimulation systems. This way, the insects can be controlled for reconnaissance purposes. They will also be able to operate under the control of artificial intelligence, moving autonomously or as part of a swarm. This idea has been proposed several times before, but today there are every opportunity to realize it. At least, it’s possible to invest significant sums of money in this project, which will certainly foster interesting engineering solutions.

Cyborg insects offer greater autonomy than fully artificial robotic platforms. This makes their mass production feasible, even using a fairly large existing base of elements.

Unfortunately, in our world, the military is the first to receive the latest “toys.”

Cyborg cockroaches will be no exception, although it’s easy to find a civilian purpose for them as well: the reconnaissance of difficult locations, including structural inspection, as well as plant pollination, for example, using cyborg bees. In any case, interesting developments always go beyond the original purpose, which will also be the case with cyborg insects.
