OpenAI is preparing a major change to ChatGPT’s rules: starting in December, age-verified users will be able to interact with adult content, including erotica.
The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, announced the change, emphasizing his commitment to respecting adult users. This change will be part of the age restriction system that OpenAI intends to fully implement by the end of the year.
The company had previously announced its intention to allow the development of ChatGPT apps with adult content, subject to all required controls and age verification. It’s now clear that this isn’t just about external developments: the platform itself will begin supporting explicit dialogues with artificial intelligence, subject to appropriate access conditions.
This move seems like a logical continuation of the competition in the personalized AI device segment. For example, Elon Musk’s startup xAI has already released winking virtual companions in the form of 3D anime models, available in the Grok app. However, unlike xAI’s solutions, which are currently more suited to gaming, OpenAI emphasizes controllability and psychological safety.
Further announcements include the reintroduction of GPT-4o as an option in ChatGPT, after the new default GPT-5 engine was criticized for its lack of “humanity.” OpenAI acknowledged that overly cautious implementation of mental health restrictions made its AI less useful and enjoyable for most users. This prompted the company to create tools to identify struggling users and gradually loosen filters where safe to do so.
To develop a long-term strategy for sensitive communication scenarios, OpenAI established an internal advisory committee on well-being, composed of eight experts who study the impact of digital technology on mental health. However, as Ars Technica points out, not a single suicide prevention expert was included on the committee, despite public calls from relevant organizations to strengthen protections for vulnerable users.
All of these steps signal OpenAI’s commitment to adopting a more flexible and diverse attitude in the use of its AI tools , while demonstrating a willingness to adapt to societal demands, ethical requirements, and the competitive environment.
