Rust has received a major update : version 1.91 officially brings Windows support on 64-bit ARM systems to the same level as Linux and macOS.
Builds for the aarch64-pc-windows-msvc architecture are now in the highest compatibility class, ensuring all tests pass and binaries are available. For users of ARM computers running Windows, this makes Rust a complete industrial development tool, without the need for manual compilation.
Additionally, the aarch64-pc-windows-gnullvm and x86_64-pc-windows-gnullvm builds have achieved Tier 2 status, bringing them closer to full support. The team plans to add missing components, including installation packages and LLVM tools, in the future.
In addition to expanding platform compatibility, the update has strengthened the code analysis system. Rust 1.91 now automatically warns about the potential creation of dangling pointers if a function returns raw references to local variables.
This mechanism works based on warnings, preventing potential errors that could lead to accessing freed memory. The developers emphasize that this doesn’t make the code unsafe, but it helps identify dangerous constructs early.
The release also includes a large set of interfaces and stabilized functions. These include new methods for atomic pointers, integer operations, path and file system management, and string and IP address manipulation. Support for some constant context APIs has been expanded, increasing the language’s flexibility when writing low-level code .
The project team emphasizes that the update isn’t limited to technical improvements. Work continues to unify tools and infrastructure across operating systems, ensuring Windows support on ARM remains on par with traditional platforms. Users can install the new version via Rustup or switch to the beta channel to test future changes.
