In the age of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, Wikipedia’s importance as a reliable source of knowledge has become particularly significant. While neural networks generate text, images, and videos, their work relies on human-generated content.
Behind every algorithmic response lies decades of collaborative work by editors who have manually gathered, verified, and refined the facts. Without this human foundation, the very idea of artificial intelligence loses its sustainability.
According to the Wikimedia Foundation, artificial intelligence cannot exist without constantly updated human knowledge. Without this source, language models will begin to degrade and eventually stop producing accurate information.
Wikipedia’s strength lies in its community of volunteer editors, numbering hundreds of thousands. They create and edit articles, discuss their content, and build consensus. The Foundation merely maintains the infrastructure and protects the project legally and technically, without interfering with its content.
The main difference between Wikipedia and machine learning is that the latter relies on human interaction: discussion, consensus, and careful analysis of facts. AI can combine or reprocess data, but it cannot autonomously discover a rare document in an archive or take a photo of an event to supplement an article. Furthermore, Wikipedia exists in over 300 languages and is often created by native speakers , making it a unique multilingual platform for developing culturally sensitive AI models.
The project remains a model of transparency : all users see the same information, without algorithmic customization or hidden commercial interests. Every statement is linked to its source, and the edit history is accessible to anyone. This openness builds trust and distinguishes Wikipedia from systems that might produce fictitious information, creating the appearance of authenticity.
The Wikimedia Foundation does not reject artificial intelligence , but uses it for strictly defined purposes: to assist editors, not to replace them. One area of development involves automatic vandalism detection, to free up volunteers for more meaningful work. At the same time, community members themselves are developing guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools.
The creators of Wikipedia emphasize that neural network systems rely heavily on open, non-commercial resources like their platform . For this reason, the Foundation encourages AI companies to properly attribute the sources of their data and to financially support Wikipedia. This can be done through the Wikimedia Enterprise platform, which allows the project’s materials to be used on a large scale without overloading the servers and helps maintain its sustainability.
The Foundation believes that the future of the Internet depends directly on supporting living human knowledge . Wikipedia remains the largest and most transparent repository of verified information, and it is on this foundation that trust in the digital environment is built.
In January 2026, the project will celebrate its 25th anniversary, continuing to be a place where people create, verify, and transmit knowledge, despite the noise of algorithms.
